The Mankato Area Smoke Free Coalition was formed in 1999 by a concerned
community member. In 2004 the Blue Earth County Medical Society joined
the group. Together we have made great strides in educating the public
on the dangers of secondhand smoke and changing smoke free policies to
protect all workers.
Our accomplishments include:
- Helped pass a comprehensive smoke free ordinance in Mankato
which took effect July 1, 2006.
- Provided "Implementation Packets" to Mankato bars and restaurants
to aid in implementing the smoke free ordinance.
- Partnered with local public health agencies to deliver supportive materials to local businesses.
- Hosting community events to build awareness.
- Educating the public about the dangers of secondhand smoke and
the importance of smoke free policies.
- Increasing the awareness and updating residents through hosing
education booths and producing a monthly newsletter.
- Commissioned a public opinion poll of North Mankato voters:
74% of voters want a comprehensive smoke free ordinance.
